FlightsongHarmony through flight

In development

Why it exists

You don't conquer this world. You harmonize with it.

Flightsong is a meditative flight through a living musical landscape. You guide an abstract spirit on the wind, through a world that moves between stillness and crescendo.

There is no story to follow and no score to chase. The spirit is deliberately abstract, so what the journey means is yours to decide. Every fragment of sound you gather changes both the music and the world around you.

How a flight unfolds

What a flight is made of

  1. i.DriftThe world carries you forward; you shape the path with soft inertia. Fly high and the song thins to air; drop low and it warms and deepens.
  2. ii.GatherGlowing orbs float on the wind, each color a different instrument. A gust-like dash reaches the ones just out of reach.
  3. iii.LayerEach orb adds its instrument to the song (drum, guitar, flute and more), and the world shifts with it.
  4. iv.RestSilence fragments hush the last sound you gathered. A pause in the music, then you begin again.

Fragments of sound

Gather the song

Every glowing orb carries an instrument, and its color tells you which one. Hover to hear it; touch it to add it to the song that plays through the rest of this page. One pale fragment holds silence: touch it, and it hushes the last sound you gathered.

The orchestra is waitingNo instruments yetTouch an orb to begin the music.

These sounds are a browser-synthesized stand-in, not the game's real instrumentation

As the music grows, so does the world

It begins almost in silence.

Silence is a tool here, not an absence. The palette is pale and the hills are only outlines.

One sound, and the world steadies.

Whichever you gathered first grounds everything. Color starts to seep back into the ridges.

More voices join, and the wind quickens.

Tension builds: new layers of landscape drift into view and the air begins to move.

A crescendo, then a breath of release.

The voices you gathered swell together, then the music opens up and lets you rest.

Resolution.

Whatever you gathered sings as one, and the world opens out around it.

Behind the scenes

How the world is made to listen

Flightsong is built in Unity, with every system designed around one rule: the music leads, and everything else follows.

About the project

A small project with a long horizon

Flightsong began with a feeling more than a mechanic: the calm of drifting on a current, and the small thrill of a melody coming together because of where you chose to go.

I'm building it to be therapeutic rather than challenging. There are no failure states; slipping into silence only quiets the last sound you found, and you simply gather it again: a rest, not a restart.

The plan is deliberately patient: first make the movement feel right and the music feel meaningful, then bring in art collaborators, and only then grow from a single polished level toward a full journey of about an hour.

Flightsong is an independent work in progress, not a finished commercial game. What exists today is a prototype I'm using to explore expressive movement, music, atmosphere and interface design; this page is part of the same experiment.
